5 Oct: A life saving procedure worth learning
A WORKSHOP in Penang on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was an eye-opening experience for over 100 participants who learned about its importance in saving a person's life.
The 'Push Hard, Push Fast', A Community CPR & First Aid Class, jointly organised by the Penang Medical Practitioners' Society (PMPS) and the Adventist Life Support Education Centre, was held at the Adventist College of Nursing Auditorium on Sunday.
In his opening speech, State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh urged the participants to continue creating awareness on the importance of emergency aid.
"Please take back home and share the knowledge with other people.
"You may not be trained for it but if you come prepared, you can do it. That’s what human brains are for," he said.
PMPS president Datuk Dr Lim Huat Bee said heart disease was the number one killer in Malaysia, with up to 80% of all cardiac arrests occurring at home.
"The most common cause of death for a heart attack in adults is a disturbance in the electrical rhythm of the heart called ventricular fibrillation. It can be treated but it requires applying electrical shock called defibrillation to the chest.
"If defibrillation is unavailable, brain death will occur in less than 10 minutes.
"One way of buying time is to provide artificial breathing and circulation through CPR until a defibrillator is available," he said.
Dr Lim added that the victim’s chance of survival was greatest if CPR was started as soon as possible.
"The earlier you do CPR to a person who is not breathing or without a heartbeat, the greater the chance of a successful resuscitation because you keep oxygenated blood flow to the heart and brain until a defibrillator arrives.
"Good CPR is better than bad CPR, but bad CPR is a hundred times better than no CPR at all," he said.
Penang Adventist Hospital president and chief executive officer Datuk Teddric J. Mohr said their goal was to train as many people as they could in CPR.
In the three-hour course, the participants learned basic first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an Automated External Defibrilator (AED).
They also practised CPR on adult and child mannequins.

PMPS Family Day 25-7-2010 @ Jerejak Rainforest Spa And Resort, Penang
PMPS organized this year’s family day on the 25th July 2020. The venue chosen was Jerejak Rainforest Resort and Spa . There were a total of 39 participants. We gathered at the Jerejak jetty at 8.00am and was taken on a short 15 minute ferry ride to the island of Jerejak where the resort was situated on the east coast of the island.
The ride was pleasant amist the glowing rising morning sun. Upon disembarking, we refreshed our self with some light refreshment, coffee and tea. Then it was time for the fun to start. All of us headed down to the man made beach where after a short introduction of ourselves we were briefed on the games that was going to be played.
We were arranged in 4 groups of 10 each and some calling their group "The Senior Citizen Group" and others "The Wild". The first event was "Monkey Run" where we had to run for 20 meters and back with 2 balls grasped below our arms and the third ball in between our thigh. The winner was group No 4. This was followed by rope walk where a single rope was passed in between each participants leg from the first to the last standing person and the whole group had to walk forward crossing a line and then walk backwards to the finishing line. It was hilarious to see some participants falling over each other. The winner was group 2.
The following event was coconut throw, just like bowling but here instead of balls we used coconut to hit the pins down. Once again, group 1 emerged winners.
The last event was treasure hunt which was the grand finale. All the clues were kept in places between the jetty and the resort. We all had to endure some difficult questions but overall this was the event most enjoyed by every one.
While waiting for the sumptuous buffet lunch to be ready, some participants cooled themselves in the pool.
A wide array of local and western food was then served while simultaneously the lucky draw and game prizes were given out. Among the prizes were cash voucher worth over RM 500 ringgit, hampers and a rice cooker.
We all enjoyed ourselves while for some it was making new friends and others renewing old friendship.
The event was such a success that some members have already suggested as to our next family day - on a cruise ship to Phuket or a overnight stay at a theme park. I am sure with a better response from all members it is possible.

PMPS Family Day 2010
Family Day Tree Top Walk by Dr Aaidah Abd Majid
Our family day was held on the 9th of August 2009, Sunday, at Sungai Sedim Tree Top Walk in Kulim. There were 40 adults and 8 children who joined the family day.
Our meeting point was at the second toll on the BKE express way, just before the Kulim Hightech Park junction. We gather there at 7.30am as many are not familiar with the destination. All together, 9 cars convoys to Sungai Sedim. We reach the place one hour later. Once we step out of the car we can feel the cool breeze and fresh air. We can hear the sound of the water flowing in the river. The environment makes
you feel relaxed. You can experience a peaceful mind rarely obtained from city living.
We all have a quick breakfast with sandwich, fried mee hoon, curry puff, hot coffee, and Milo. After breakfast we took the tree top hike after the briefing by the officer in charge. The platform was very high and sits near the top of the trees, as the name would suggest. Although it was a scary experience, it was fun and interesting indeed. When we saw the view of the river from the top we forgot about being scared at all.
At 11.00am we started our family games for the adults, and later, the children. Then, everybody enjoys the chicken dance with the demo by the officer in charge of organizing our games session there.

We have lunch at 12.30pm till 1.00pm, and then it’s the time for price giving ceremony. Prices were given not only to the winners, but also to the lucky ones as there is a lucky draw for family. At 1.30pm, we are free to do as we please, and some went for a swim in the cold and refreshing waters of Sungai Sedim.

20 Feb 2010: Evening With Medical Protection Society
Venue:
Adventist College Of Nursing Auditorium
Speaker:
Dr. Teoh Ming Keng, Director of Service Asia
Topic:
“Avoiding and Resolving Medical Disputes”
The evening with MPS started with a nice vegetarian buffet dinner with tossing of “yee san” for prosperity which was graciously sponsored by Penang Adventist Hospital. A total of 37 participants attended the talk by Dr. Teoh Ming Keng, the Director of Service in Asia. The topic presented by Dr. Teoh on “Avoiding and Resolving Medical Disputes” is very relevant to the current practice of medicine in the private where the patients are more educated and demanding and the law protects their rights.
Dr. Teoh’s take home message for doctors is to respect patient’s right, develop good communication skills with patients, obtain proper informed consent, maintaining proper documentation of patient’s management, learning to say sorry and never to instigate patient to sue another doctor. The evening ended after an hour of very lively “questions and answers” session where doctors expressed their concerns over some issues. Dr. Teoh reassured the doctors that MPS compensation has not limit and MPS will only compensate if members were found to negligent by the court. A third party can not sue members to recover cost if the court found the members not negligent.
