Letter to all General Practitioners/Family Physicians of Penang

Time to act

Dear Colleagues,

First of all allow me to thank you for electing me to the chair of President of PMPS, the premier Private Medical Practitioner’s Association in the country. I promise to do my best in this capacity.

We in the private health care are in a crucial juncture in the medical history of the country. The Government of Malaysia is in the process of formulating a Health Care Finance System (1 Care) that is all encompassing which will change the Primary Health Care Services very drastically.

In theory, this system incorporates both private and public primary health care services providing seamless care to the public. The important aspects in the scheme are:

1. Credentialing and Accreditation of all Primary Care providers 2. Resources will be pooled and managed by government linked or private company with General Practitioners work on capitation. 3. Prescribing and Dispensing of drugs will be separated 4. Primary Care providers will function as “gatekeepers”

A technical working group has been set up by the Ministry of Health involving various groups and so far met at least 3 times and is progressing very rapidly.

The choice we have now is, either take part in the decision making from the beginning or suffer the consequences. To this end PMPS is setting up a GP subcommittee which will handle this urgent matter. The committee needs your input.

We are interested in your opinion.

I would like to appeal to all the general practitioners in Penang to come for a special meeting on the 15th May 2011. Several speakers including Dr. Steven Chow, president of FMPMPS will be there to address the issue. We will discuss on the current status of Health Care Finance and will collect feedback from your which will be used in the subsequent meetings with Ministry of Health.

I appreciate and looking forward to your undivided support.

Humbly Yours,
Col ® Dr Vejayan Rajoo
President, Penang Medical Practitioners’ Society

New Website Features for PMPS Members

Dear PMPS Members,

The PMPS Committee is pleased to inform you of the upgrade of the PMPS website (www.penangpmps.org) and the incorporation of new features to the website.

Features of the website to highlight are:

  • "Members login" that enables members to access personal information, check subscription payments and access certain sections of the website
  • Albums featuring photos from PMPS events
  • PMPS newsletters
  • "Medical Legal Care of Patients", "Lifestyle Intervention" and "CPR Update" sections
  • Advertising portal

The “Lifestyle Intervention” section features articles from Dr. Yen Ang who is a nutritionist and a lifestyle intervention consultant (DrPH, MSc, MPH, RD, ACSM). She will contribute regular articles that may be useful for you and your patients in living a healthier lifestyle.

The “Medical Legal Care of Patients” section will feature medical-legal aspects of patient care. Some of the articles that appear in this section are posted with permission from the Medical Protection Society. Dr. Patrick Tan, who holds a master degree in Medical law (LLM, UK), will be coordinating this section.

PMPS members are invited to submit articles (including non-medical articles), recipes or jokes for the “Laughter is the Best Medicine” section. Please note that submissions should be original to avoid copyright concerns.

The advertising portal will allow members to advertise within the confines of the law. Members will be given free advertising space for a short period after which a reasonable fee will be charged if members wish to continue using the facility.

Special Announcement for PMPS Members

Dear PMPS Members,

Over the last few months, we've been working hard on the back-end of this website to create a special members-only section for you.

If you scroll to the bottom of this page and look at the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a LOG IN section which asks for a USERNAME and PASSWORD.

This section allows you to update your profile information easily (for example, if you have changed your phone number or email address, you can easily log in to update this information). If you'd like other members to know you better, you can also upload your photo.  We aim to make the PMPS Members Directory always updated and always fresh so that you can contact other members easily.

While the general public who use this website can only view your name, clinic or workplace address and workplace general phone number when they click on Members Directory, PMPS members who log in to the special section can view more information about fellow members (which is not available to the public).

Beginning this year, we will also be putting special articles and medical information into this special section for members.

In time, this section will also make life easier for you - you can log in to pay your membership fees online safely and securely. We will update you once the payment facilities are in place.

As this section is kept private for PMPS members only, you will need a USERNAME and PASSWORD to access this section.

How to Get Your Password

If you are a PMPS member, please contact us and we will provide you with your unique username and password so you can begin to log in and update your information.

Without this username and password, you are UNABLE to log in to the special section so please contact us as soon as you can.

If you haven't provided us your email address at all, please do so as we regularly update all PMPS members via email about CME programmes, social events and other useful and exciting events related to the medical fraternity in Penang.

Thank you.

Website Administrator on behalf of Penang Medical Practitioners' Society (PMPS)
